Provide a “Protective Umbrella” for Lasers — High-temperature Moisture-proof Maintenance Techniques

The combination of high temperature and high humidity in summer is the period when laser failure is high. Many people have a perception mistake: industrial equipment is “leather resistant to construction and is not afraid of heat.” But the opposite is true – lasers, as high-precision optical devices, are extremely sensitive to changes in temperature and humidity, and the slightest inadvertence may trigger performance degradation or even core component damage.

For this reason, Huachuang Hongdu has specifically introduced laser high temperature moisture prevention maintenance techniques to protect your efficient production.

I. Why are lasers Afraid of High Temperatures and Humidity?

The harm of high temperature and high humidity to lasers is systemic, ranging from optical cores to electrical systems , and then to cooling circuits , every link will be impacted.

① Optical system damaged

  • Unstable power and beam quality: The gain medium and resonator deform due to heat, directly causing fluctuations in output power and degradation of beam quality, ultimately affecting the process pass rate of precision cutting and welding.
  • Accelerated aging and damage of lenses: high temperatures accelerate the aging of optical coatings;Temperature fluctuations can easily cause condensation and fogging inside the chamber, leaving residual water stains;this may result in weak cutting power and reduced efficiency, or in severe cases, cause the lens to shatter.
  • The thermal lensing effect becomes prominent: uneven heating of the crystal forms a “thermal lens,” causing the focal point of the beam to shift and the spot to diverge, leading to a noticeable decline in processing accuracy and consistency.

Accelerated aging of electrical and electronic systems

  • The lifespan of components has been significantly shortened: circuit boards, capacitors, drive modules, chips, and other components have long been exposed to high-temperature environments, causing their aging rates to increase exponentially, resulting in a marked reduction in the overall service life of the equipment.
  • Declining insulation performance leads to easy short circuits: High temperatures reduce the equipment’s insulation rating, causing frequent leakage and short circuits; this may result in alarm shutdowns in mild cases, or even burn out power supplies and main control boards in severe cases.

Increased load on the cooling waterway

  • The water-cooled machine’s overload creates a vicious cycle: When the ambient temperature is too high, the chiller exceeds its heat dissipation capacity, making it difficult for the temperature control system to reach the set value; as a result, heat inside the laser cannot be removed in time, causing the temperature to rise continuously and enter a vicious cycle where “the hotter it gets, the harder it becomes to dissipate the heat.”
  • Seal aging, leakage, and pipe blockage: High temperatures accelerate the aging and cracking of rubber seals, increasing the risk of leakage; At the same time, high water temperature easily promotes algae growth and sedimentary scale buildup, which block water channels and further degrade heat dissipation performance.

II. Laser High Temperature Moisture Prevention Maintenance Tips

Having understood the harm mechanism of high temperature and high humidity, we will next address environmental control, heat dissipation protection, moisture removal and prevention, and circuit protection across four dimensions to implement specialized summer maintenance measures.

Strictly control the ambient temperature and humidity of the entire machine

Creating a stable operating environment for lasers is the first line of defense for summer maintenance.

  • Operating temperature: maintained between 18~26°C , The ambient temperature must not exceed 30°C .
  • Environmental humidity: controlled within 40%~60% RH ;Humidity exceeding 65% must trigger dehumidification, while below 30% can easily cause electrostatic discharge that damages circuit boards.
  • Temperature control: The daily temperature difference in the server room is controlled ≤5°C , Avoid temperature fluctuations to prevent internal condensation.

Strengthen cooling and heat protection

The server room should be equipped with industrial-grade air conditioning, operating at a constant temperature 24 hours a day ; Pay attention to the air conditioning vent prohibited from blowing directly on the laser body to prevent excessive local temperature differences from causing condensation.

Water-cooled machine models: key controls

The chiller is the “heat dissipation heart” of water-cooled lasers , and during summer, the following five items require focused inspection:

  • Temperature check: Before daily startup, confirm that the chiller’s set temperature meets the laser requirements (typically 22~25°C ).

△ the Chiller Temperature Setting

  • Level check: observe the coolant level gauge to ensure the level is between the “minimum” and “maximum” marks.

△ Check the Water Level of the Chiller

  • Pressure check: pay attention to the pressure gauge reading; the normal operating pressure is generally 0.1 ~ 0.3 MPa .
  • Cleaning and dust removal: Regularly clean the water chiller casing, cooling fans, and filter nets of dust and debris to ensure the fans operate normally and airflow through the filters is smooth.

△ the Chiller Filter

  • Ventilation clearance: Maintain sufficient ventilation space around the chiller to ensure efficient heat dissipation.

Wind cooler models: Pay attention to heat dissipation and light avoidance

The wind cooling machine type mainly relies on the fuselage to dissipate heat, and it is more important to ensure ventilation conditions in summer.

  • Clean the heat dissipation filter weekly: clogged filters can cause internal heat buildup, potentially damaging the drive power supply; ensure at least ≥50 cm clearance around the device for proper heat dissipation.

△ Set Aside Heat Spacing

  • Avoid direct sunlight: install blackout curtains on windows to prevent equipment from overheating due to exposure.

Implement anti-humidity and dehumidification measures

In addition to temperature control, moisture prevention is equally important , especially during the rainy season and periods when nighttime humidity rises.

  • The machine room needs to be equipped with a professional dehumidifier to maintain continuous operation during the rainy season and during the summer when the nighttime humidity rises.
  • The ground should be treated with waterproofing and moisture-proofing, and the equipment base should be raised by 10 cm or more to isolate the ground moisture.
  • A temperature and humidity logger is placed in the machine room, and daily inspections record the data, and when the humidity exceeds the limit, it is promptly disposed of.

Special protection for circuits and power systems

  • High-temperature load reduction: To avoid operating equipment at full capacity for 24 hours continuously during summer, it is recommended to pause cooling once every 8 hours.
  • Moisture-proof operation: Watering the floor is prohibited inside the server room; After mopping in damp weather, the machine must be ventilated for more than 2 hours before being turned on.
  • Static electricity and humidity balance: when the ambient humidity is below 35% , turn on a humidifier to prevent static buildup.

Emergency treatment of high temperature and humidity faults

Although routine maintenance can significantly reduce the probability of failures, unexpected situations such as condensation on the cavity surface may still occur。Once condensation and moisture failure occurs, the machine should be immediately shut down and the laser output turned off, while the room dehumidification equipment should remain on continuously; then, allow it to stand still for 2 to 4 hours 。 It dries naturally. During this period, it is strictly prohibited to use hot air to blow directly onto the cavity , to avoid sudden temperature changes that could damage optical components.

Most of the summer laser failures stem from the dual role of “high temperature accumulation + high humidity re-humidity,” and are essentially human-made failures that can be avoided in advance through scientific maintenance. Implementing the special temperature and humidity control and daily inspection for the summer is the key to ensuring the stable and efficient operation of lasers in the summer, and the core measure to extend the overall service life of the equipment.
